In the summer of 2007, a central heating plant was built in Obereggen to serve the needs of the entire community. All hotels in the area were connected to this plant and since the winter of 2007/08 the heating needs of Obereggen are exclusively met by renewable energy sources. The power station uses only biomass (wood chips) and replaces approximately 500,000 liters of fuel oil annually.
During the planning and implementation phases, the builders went beyond guaranteeing a good cost-effectiveness of the plant. They wanted to make sure that emission standards would be more than met. For that purpose, they installed state-of-the-art flue gas purification units.
In 2004, the lift company put an environmental management system in place, which runs according to the ISO 14,001 standard. With both measures in place, the community plays a significant role in conserving the environment and purifying the air locally and worldwide. Hence, Obereggen deserves the title ecologically clean community. Being a member of the Alpine Pearls organization and a part of the Cultural World Heritage Site of the Dolomites, Obereggen plays its part in conserving nature and the environment.
